Dorothy Johnson, who used to work for a training provider, turned to market business after she lost her job. “Our whole team was made redundant last year, so I just decided to make cakes. We’ve got regular customers since I started doing this. The number of my clients has grown and so as other traders here. My customers keep coming back because they think the product is small and good quality.

“I think people help us a lot to build our business, and we do help the community as well, so it’s like a win-win situation, ” she says.

Some other traders like Burca Elema-Damieza, who is from Romania, found it easier to start her business here in Wales than in her own country.

These traders are working with the company Coteyledon which provides stalls to them to sell their products. The company project Blas Lleol (Local Taste) aims to help local farmers and growers to overcome barriers.

The project manager Jan Walsh, says they are trying to talk to lots of the farmers in South East Wales to find their difficulties and make efforts to help them. “They may need personnel for instance, they may need to package, to keep the produce to constant temperature, and they may also need help to get the produce into the markets. We now already have several markets in different towns and villages, and we provide training sessions as well. We are trying to do these practical things.

“We have traditional Welsh cheese, peas, sausage, and burgers, and they are all artisan but not mass produced, which are very often made of organic food. And there is hardly difference in price compared to supermarket food but the quality is better,” she says.

If you are bored with eating supermarket food every day, having a look around the monthly food and craft market can be an opportunity to find something fresh.
