Youthful Wales hold Austria in Cyprus Cup

A YOUNG Wales side finished eighth in the Cyprus Cup, losing to Austria on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Larnaca.

Jayne Ludlow’s much-changed side – which included first-time starters Gwen Davies and Kylie Nolan – were under pressure from the off against the Euro 2017 semi-finalists.

They took the lead through Sarah Puntigam on 13 minutes, her brilliant effort from 20 yards fizzing past Laura O’Sullivan.

With just five minutes left Kayleigh Green slotted home the equaliser, taking the game to penalties.

The shootout started well for Wales, with O’Sullivan saving Austria’s first spot-kick. However, three consecutive misses by Angharad James, Alice Griffiths and Sophie Ingle meant the Austrians prevailed 3-2.

Wales now turn their attention back to qualifying for next year’s World Cup, and their game against England on April 6.
