Is Wales a nation of novelists? Alt.Cardiff takes to the streets to ask the question: “Is it true that everyone has a novel in them?”
Tom Board, 32, Project officer for Keep Wales Tidy, Abergavenny
I think that’s probably true. I think there’s varying degrees of quality of book in each person, but yeah, there is probably a novel in every person.
Andy Philips, 64, retired, Vale of Glamorgan
It’s probably true of most people, if they use their experience of life.
Alan O’Connor, 24, Research assistant, Dublin
I don’t really think it’s true. I think while an awful lot of people have an awful lot of life experience, so much of it is the same that not everyone will be able to produce something unique.
Rebecca Hutcheon, 26, Learning centre assistant, Bristol
I don’t think it’s true because there’s already enough literature out there and I think it’s quality rather than quantity when it comes to books.
Lu Ping Nan, 31, Administration, China
I believe in that, and I think everybody, if they have plenty of time, can write a novel about themselves.
James Campbell, 23, Engineer, Cardiff
I think it’s 100% accurate. I personally believe that I’ve got a life story to tell and I think that everyone on the planet with a brain and a beating heart has got a story to go with it from start to finish.
Irene Hodgkiss, 61, Retired, Bolton
Oh, that’s so very true. After living 61 years, I’ve got a lot of experience to put down in a book. Definitely true.
Ann Debeljakovic, 19, Travelling, Australia
I guess it’s very true. I think everybody at least has a story to tell and some kind of narrative to give that’s different to everybody else, but whether people are motivated to write them is a different story, I guess.
November is National Novel Writing Month. For thirty days and thirty nights, aspiring novelists from across the world come together to create the books they have always dreamed of writing. Many people in and around Cardiff are rising to the challenge.
The aim is to write 50,000 words by 30 November. Recklessness is key and output is everything. As the website says, “Embrace imperfection and see where it takes you.”
Jay Walker, who coordinates the event in Wales, said, “NaNoWriMo is the most pointless writing competition on the planet. It’s as pointless as jumping from a balloon to fall 24 miles back to earth. That’s why we do it.
“All writers are welcome, from beginners to professionals – after all, Wales is the Land of Bards.”
