Students at Royal Welsh work like professionals
MA Musical Theatre students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama have been put through their paces as they work towards producing a version of popular musical, Rent.
The performers have been treated as they would in the professional world, with long rehearsal schedules. Successful names in the world of musical theatre, such as Lee proud, choreographer of the West End’s Billy Elliot), have been drafted in to ensure that the quality of their performances are of a professional standard.
Course leader, Vivien Care, has been bowled over by the work of her students. She says, “I really am touched and impressed with what they’re achieving.”
Vivien is sure that the hard work the cast is putting in will result in a high quality show. She explains, “They’re producing some astonishingly professional work. I think it’s going to be a fantastic production.”
Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions) and can be purchased online or over the phone on 029 2039 1391.
It may have made its Broadway debut 17 years ago, but this month, students at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama are out to prove that the musical Rent is still relevant today.
Performed by a student cast studying for a Master’s in Musical Theatre at the college, Rent tells the story of a group of New Yorkers struggling with relationships, illness and what it means to be human.
Course leader, Vivien Care, believes that the humanity at the core of the story is what makes the long-running show appealing to audiences. She says, “The characters in Rent [are] just trying to find their way through life, and I think everyone can relate to that.”
The show will run from 6-14 December at the Bute Theatre.
