A Cardiff delicatessen has seen customers go crazy for continental Christmas food, over 70 years after the store’s founders fled Nazi Europe.
Wally’s Delicatessen is always a delight for children to visit, as the shelves are stacked high with brightly coloured Christmas boxes.
Wally’s Delicatessen, Royal Arcade, has seen a huge demand for their Christmas produce, selling everything from Italian panettone to German stollen.
The Salamon family abandoned their Austrian delicatessen when war broke out, re-opening their business in Cardiff in 1947.
A far cry from war-torn Europe, the store is a popular meeting place for ethnic minorities, while the team hopes their Christmas products will secure customer loyalty all year.
Owner Steven Salamon said, “Wally’s Delicatessen provides great gifts because, instead of locally sourced food, we import authentic products that are unavailable in supermarkets.
“Elderly people who visited when they were young now bring their own grandchildren Christmas shopping.”
Wally and his two brothers are sitting on the steps of the Austrian family store with their mother. The family moved to Wales when Wally was just three years old.
