Asylum Justice is hosting The Great Legal Quiz to raise money and awareness of its work supporting vulnerable migrants
Asylum Justice is a charity which provides free legal advice and representation for refugees and asylum seekers in Wales. It is hosting a fundraising quiz in Cardiff on 29 November.
The Great Legal Quiz is a nationwide event organised by the network of Legal Support Trusts and the Access to Justice Foundation. Individuals and organisations across the country will be taking part to raise money for their local legal advice charities.
Despite the name, the quiz will be based on general knowledge questions, no specialist legal knowledge is necessary. Alcoholic drinks and snacks will be available to buy.
“The aim of the event is to raise money but we also want to increase awareness of our charity in the local community,” said Alison McQueen, Asylum Justice trustee.
Founded in 2005, Asylum Justice is the only charity in Wales to support asylum seekers, refugees and other vulnerable migrants who don’t have access to legal aid.
Alison added, “The quiz is a great chance for people to get together and have a fun evening while raising money for an important cause.”
Alison has noticed demand for the charity’s services has significantly increased in recent years in line with government’s 2013 legal aid cuts in England and Wales.
A new report by the Commission on Justice in Wales has recommended powers to control justice be devolved to the Senedd. According to the report, Wales has been hit hardest by legal aid cuts since 2012.
The report shows that Wales has seen a 35% drop in the number of civil and family legal aid solicitors and a reduction of 89% in legal aid advice provided by third sector organisations.
“This makes the work we are doing at Asylum Justice even more crucial,” said Alison.
