Cardiff Foodbank
Cardiff Foodbank began in April 2009 and has since fed over 3,000 people by collecting food donations for those in financial hardship. It aims to use Cardiff’s community to support the hidden hungry. Contributions come from many sources other than individuals, such as schools, churches and businesses.
How it works
Food donations are stored in a warehouse in Ely. Professional care works issue vouchers to those most in need, and each voucher can be exchanged for three days worth of food.
Sainsbury’s collection
The final food collection of the year takes place on Saturday 3 December. The full address of the location: Sainsbury’s, Colchester Avenue, Penylan, Cardiff, CF23 9XN.
Christmas foods
The list of Christmas foods being sought out include: tinned ham, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake, mince pies, biscuits, boxes of chocolates and Christmas crackers.
Charity donation
There will also be a charity bucket collection at Sainsbury’s in Queen Street on Saturday 17 December. Anyone who would like to help volunteer that day should call Ian Purcell on 17891177700 or email info@cardifffoodbank.org.uk.
Other ways to donate
There are many methods to financially aid the food bank. This includes by text message, PayPal, Aidmatrix or sending a cheque. Alternatively, there are several opportunities to volunteer. More information can be found at their website.
Future collections
There are already three collections scheduled for next year. These will all take place at Sainsbury’s in Thornhill on 24 March 2012, 15 September 2012 and 8 December 2012.
Trussell Trust
Cardiff Foodbank began as part of the Trussell Trust, a network of over 90 food banks. The Trussell Trust is based in Salisbury and aims to tackle poverty in the UK. This weekend sees Cardiff Foodbank’s final collection of the year
If you have already done your Christmas shopping and have anything in abundance, then Cardiff Foodbank is interested.
The food bank is holding its last collection of 2011 on Saturday 3 December at Sainsbury’s on Colchester Avenue in Penylan. It aims to fight hidden hunger by supporting people in Cardiff who struggle to feed themselves.
The founder, Ian Purcell, said, “We’ve already had a few from earlier this month, but any Christmas donations would be appreciated.”
Christmas foods being sought out include traditional items like Christmas pudding, tinned ham and mince pies.
Ian added, “Last year, we got 400kg of food at our Christmas collection from that one specific collection.
“Hopefully we can do the same this year.”
