Spina bifida in Wales
Wales had the highest incidence of spina bifida in the world in the 70s with three to four reported cases per 1000 births. The spines of foetuses with spina bifida do not close properly leaving them disabled for life.
Folic acid, also known as Vitamin B9, can prevent the defect. It is found in:
peas, potatoes, broccoli, spinach, yeast extract, orange juice, bananas, peanuts, baked beans and granary or wholemeal bread

“The Shine Cymru team work with individuals and families to ensure those with spina bifida have access to the right services, support and information to help manage the conditions and lead more
fulfilling lives.
“Shine Cymru is urgently calling on the Welsh Assembly Government to take decisive action to ensure that awareness is raised about the need for women to start taking folic acid before they become pregnant, and thus protect thousands of future Welsh citizens from the loss of life and permanent disability that results from birth defects.” –

A Welsh charity says folic acid can prevent birth defects
A charity launched a campaign last week to prevent common birth defects
in Wales.
Shine Cymru launched the Go Folic! campaign on Tuesday 29 November at the Senedd. The campaign urges all sexually active women in Wales to take daily supplements of folic acid, which can prevent many common birth defects of the nervous system including spina bifida.
Shine Cymru director Kate Thomas said: “The most serious form [of defect], anencephaly, means that the baby will not live beyond birth, and many babies born with spina bifida face a life with serious, multiple disabilities.”
Wales had the highest rate of spina bifida in the world in the 70s but despite this only 5.5% of British women take daily folic acid supplements.
