AltCardiff’s pick of the best events to avoid the festive feeling this Christmas
Winter Solstice
Winter Solstice, an important event throughout history, celebrates the shortest day and longest night of the annum and falls on 22 December this year. St Fagans are hosting a Winter Solstice Feast in their Iron Age village on 17 and 18 December at 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.
Birkenstock Fem Festival
Gwdihw will be hosting its annual fem festival this Sunday, December 18.
The Birkenstock festival is back, with plenty of music, poetry and open mic, as well as the more obscure mask performances and therapy sessions.
The festival begins at 4pm and entry is free, but donations are welcome.
An antidote to festive films
There are few things less Christmassy than a giant lizard smashing buildings. Anyone looking for an antidote to simpering, festive favourites like Love Actually might fancy taking a trip to Chapter Arts Centre this Christmas, where the original Japanese version of Godzilla will be unleashed for its first ever UK release.
18 – 23 December, 02920 304400.
Robin Ince at Chapter
Uncaged Monkeys comedian Robin Ince comes direct to Chapter from Edinburgh Fringe for a double bill show on 7 January. Robin’s winning combination of science and comedy sold out in a matter of weeks, but by popular demand Robin is performing a warm up show. Tickets can be bought here.
Art opinions at the museum
If you’re a budding artistic virtuoso then get down to National Museum Cardiff this New Year. The museum will host an art opinion service on 6 January, inviting you to bring in a picture or art object that you have created for professional feedback from the Art Department.
Fed up with Christmas? Check out some non-festive cultural events

Starbucks have been selling their festive drinks since mid-November, the Coca Cola advert has been gracing our screens for the last month and the shops have been selling advent calendars since the end of summer.
While it’s all very well and good getting into the festive spirit, the season of good joy and all that, it seems Christmas is becoming more and more saturated every year. By the time 25 December rolls round even the most enthusiastic among us are all partied out, exhausted from all the Christmas shopping and generally fed up.
Tommy O”Rourke, manager of Rainbow Glass Creations in Cardiff Christmas Market said, “Every shop you go into is trying to sell you Christmas, instead of it just being Christmas.
“It’s commercialism at its worst.”
Why not save the festivities for actual Christmas and spend your valuable time in the run up to the day participating in a few of the non-festive cultural events going on.
