The potato shortage has also effected Cardiff‘s indoor market and vegetable shops in its surrounding area. Richard Swambo, from Laura’s in Canton, expressed how there was no such thing as a cheap potato anymore and he had seen a drop in the quality of his product.
“The most popular potato that I sell is the Maris Piper and normally it costs me five pounds a bag from merchants, now I pay nearly nine pounds,” says Swambo. He plans to pack his own potatoes as this will reduce the price and mean he can keep his prices stable.
Similarly in Cardiff Market the sellers are now finding it difficult to sell their packed potatoes for a pound. After the rainfall the baking potato particularly is now non-existent and one seller explains how, “This has been the first time in weeks where I have been able to buy a good Maris Piper as it has been so bad.”

The wet summer has a significant consequence for chip shop owners as the cost of the potato rises by nearly 50 per cent.
Farmers are struggling with their potato crop this season as they are found rotting in the ground. This has had a direct effect on chip shop owners. Although they are still buying the same quantity from merchants they are finding more soil in the bags and a poorer quality to cook. Andrew Milon from Pete’s Plaice explained how his merchant was debating sourcing his stock from France.
Milon is resisting increasing his prices as he says, “It is difficult, but you try and explain that to a person on the street who only has so much money.”
