Do you think Chris Coleman should remain the manager of the Wales football team?
Sophie Willis, 21, Primary teaching assistant, Cardiff
“I think they should give him another chance. Wales have had so many injuries to key players like Gareth Bale that I think to kick him out of the job now would be really unfair. The last few results have been good too, but it would be nice to see someone like Craig Bellamy in the job in the future!”
Aron Barnes, 22, Trainee tax advisor, Taffs Well
“No, I don’t think he has the capability to do it, and I don’t think he’s proved anything at any of the previous clubs he’s been at. Based on Wales’ results so far, I don’t really think he has anything to show he’s the man for the job. Tony Pulice is someone to look at to take over; I think he would be quite popular with the players.”
Matthew Williams, 22, Swimming coach, Cardiff
“No, he shouldn’t, because as a coach, the highest honour is coaching your country and he’s often been quite negative about signing a new contract with Wales. I think if you have to question that then you should not be coaching at that level to begin with.”
Lisa McInnes, 39, Corporate finance manager, Taffs Well
“Yes, I think they should stick with him, because I don’t think he’s had long enough in the contract to be able to prove himself properly. He’s done well the last few games even though there have been so many injuries and he’s had to bring a lot of new, young players in. He’s done a good job during a difficult time for Wales.”
Darryl Rees, 28, Accountant, Merthyr Tydfil
“I think they played well under Gary Speed and I find Chris Coleman a bit negative. Don’t get me wrong, he’s getting the best out of the players he’s got, but I personally don’t think he’s the right person for the job. I’d like to see someone young who’s been at the top take over, like Ryan Giggs.”
Chris Jones, 21, Chemistry student, Wolverhampton
“Yes, because he can only do as well as what he’s been given. I think he’s produced some good results considering the amount of injuries Wales have had to deal with. People can only expect so much from him, and I don’t think he’s got enough top quality players at his disposal, so they should keep him on and give him another chance.”
Whether last week’s draw against Belgium was Chris Coleman’s final game as Wales football manager remains uncertain, as he awaits a decision over his future.
However, that unexpected late equaliser from an injury-ridden team may have seen Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey single-handedly keep Coleman in the job.
His future was put into question after poor results against Serbia and Macedonia in September, and with his contract expiring in November, Coleman awaits the Football Association of Wales’ decision.
Keith Morgan, of the Cardiff City Supporters Trust says, “I think they will ask senior players’ opinions on the matter, with a decision being made after their friendly against Finland next month.”
Should Coleman not remain, the likes of Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy have been suggested as replacements.
