The Awards
The 2013 Wales Sport Awards will be held on 9 December at the Sport Wales National Centre to celebrate the best of elite and grassroots sport.
The awards recognise 11 categories in total, including the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Unsung Hero, and the Wales Sports Personality of the Year. Nominations for the Unsung Hero award will close on 16 November, and the Sport Personality of the Year will be chosen from a public vote that will take place from 2-7 December.
In the Young Coach of the Year category, Ellie will compete against Sian Lewis from Neath Gymnastics Club, and Kelly Mayhew from Neyland Yacht Club in Pembrokeshire. Other Cardiff finalists in the awards include Samar Wafa in the Community Coach of the Year category for her Zumba classes, and Kat Lovett for her work in football in the Young Volunteer of the Year category.
Sport Wales
Professor Laura McAllister, the chair of Sport Wales revealed that the awards had received a record number of nominations this year.
Speaking ahead of the event she said, “The event will be a real grassroots to world-class sport celebration.
“Every year I am humbled by the dedication of these women and men to sport in Wales and I’m looking forward to hearing more about their inspirational work.
“Recognition and promotion of individuals, teams and organisations is at the very heart of what we do, and that is why the Wales Sport Awards are so important.”
Cardiff schoolgirl Ellie Glastonbury has been revealed as a finalist in the 2013 Wales Sport Awards’ Young Coach of the Year category.
The 18-year-old was nominated by her cheerleading academy Central Explosion, and will be up against two other finalists at the awards on 9 December.
Admitting she had no idea she was nominated until the finalists were announced last month, Ellie said, “I’m really looking forward to the awards evening, especially with huge stars there like Warren Gatland, I’m hoping to score my athletes a contract to perform at some of his games.”
Sport Wales has joined forces with BBC Cymru Wales to host the annual event, which will be held at the Sport Wales National Centre in Sophia Gardens.
