Jess Daly, 20, Life Guard, Cardiff
“I prefer to exercise in a group because it gives me more motivation if I go with other people. I like going to spin classes and things like that.”
James McMunn, 33, Software developer, Cardiff
“If I’m running I prefer to run alone because I use running to clear my head. Whereas, if I’m rock climbing, which is the only other sport I do, you need to go with someone to catch you if you fall!”
Julie Golding, 44, Hairdresser, Cardiff
“I think exercising with a friend is best because they keep you company and spur you on. I go to water aerobics and use the treadmill at the gym with friends.”
Carl Glover, 24, Maintenance Fitter, Cardiff
“I go on my own to the gym. Obviously there will be other people in there, but I just like to do my bit and go home.”
Carly Glover, 24, Health Care Assistant, Cardiff
“I exercise with a friend, I’d rather go with someone. I like to have some company and I probably wouldn’t go if I was on my own.”
Christian Tonge, 39, IT Programmer, Cardiff
“I prefer to exercise with at least one other person. For me, it seems to make exercising less difficult because you’re distracted by the people around you.”
Hayley Evans, 31, Marketing Executive, Cardiff
“I think I prefer to exercise alone. I find it easier to go for a walk or a jog by myself. I play squash as well which you have to do with someone else – but I won’t be playing for a while because of my broken arm!”
Group exercise classes are becoming more popular and many fitness clubs claim that classes such as Spinning and Aqua Aerobics are their life blood.
In light of this, Alt.Cardiff wanted to find out which Cardiff residents prefer to exercise with others rather than alone.
Local personal trainer, Ross Smith says, “I think a lot of people go to gym classes for the motivational aspect of having someone instruct you what do to and how to do it effectively – the same reason why people want a personal trainer, which is to spur them on through their fitness regime.”
We took to Cardiff town centre and asked the question: when you exercise do you prefer to exercise alone, with a friend or in a group?
