Bred of Safe Haven
Bordergame sees players attempt to reach Newport in the idyllic Autonomous Republic of Cymru. Bristol, in the NewK, has become an epicentre for illegal migration.
Creators Matthew Wright and John Norton wanted the performance to have integrity and authenticity. Bordergame uses refugees as both informers and actors; the show is based on and includes some of their real experiences.
Wright states, “We wanted Bordergame to reflect real peoples’ stories of migration and allow the audience to share those experiences.”
Whilst the live performance puts the audience in the shoes of the migrants, the online experience is much more sinister and is based on the Milgram Experiment.
Of the online experience Wright says, “We want people to consider how their choices impact on the lives of others.”

A new production is encouraging its audience to cross the line.
Bordergame is a simultaneous live and online performance that combines real experience with game play and theatre. The show sees a street audience attempt an ‘illegal’ border crossing by train from Bristol to Newport whilst, online, Active Citizens use surveillance to influence their fate.
The production explores themes of immigration, terrorism and surveillance but co-creator, Matthew Wright, is keen stress that it is about people not politics.
“We’re not trying to send a message. We wanted to put the audience in the shoes of the migrants so people can experience what they go through. If we get closer to their stories we might understand the situation better.”
Bordergame runs until November 21.
