What Will the Olympics do for Wales?
Programmes like Welsh Libraries Fortnight are gearing us up for the 2012 Olympics, but what effect will the Olympics have on Wales? We asked the Cardiff public: What will the Olympics do for Wales?
Jodiene Selby, 22, Tour guide, Barry “Nothing really. If anything, everyone’s going to be going to the Olympics so nothing will be happening, will it?”
Robert Power, 50, Courier driver, Cardiff “Nothing, nothing at all. I won’t be going to the Olympics. I won’t be getting ripped off!”
Magali Coulis, 26, Tour guide, France “I don’t think so really, nothing much.”
Mr and Mrs Wright, 47 and 45, Unemployed, Pontypool “Hopefully, make it. Bring a lot of tourism in, which brings in money.”
Jim Harris, 35, Pharmacist, Nigeria “I think the Olympics will bring a lot of awareness among non-Europeans about the existence of Wales, as a country.”
Luana Dee, 59, Adult Support Worker, Merthyr Tydfil/Cardiff “I don’t think it’s going to do an awful lot for Wales, although obviously, there are going to be some events taking place in Wales.”
Joe Walker, 22, Barista Maestro, Hampshire “I think the Olympics is gonna bring lots of athletes to Wales for training and I like to think the Welsh population will get behind it. It’s an Olympics for Britain not just for England.”
Welsh Libraries Fortnight has been given a 2012 Inspire Mark
Launching on November 2 at Cardiff’s Central library, the Olympic themed Libraries Fortnight begins with ‘Get Active’, and hopes to encourage members of the public to get ready for 2012 with sports classes. The day will also be attended by local sport stars including Olympic Silver Medallist, Jamie Baulch.
Speaking about the programme, Libraries marketing officer, Nicola Williams said, “We thought it was timely to get involved with London 2012. All the staff were really keen, not just for the sports link but to celebrate the cultural side of it, because obviously, it comes under the cultural Olympiad programme and obviously, libraries have a lot to offer”.
The Inspire mark is awarded to projects which are seen to encompass the values of the 2012 Olympics.
