Vox pop:
What do you think about the bus fares rising? Will it make you consider alternate means of transport?
Rhiannon Sanger, 22, receptionist, Cardiff
It’s not fair that the bus prices are rising when the minimum wages hardly ever go up, the living costs of everything go up… if the bus prices are rising I might as well use my car and not have to rely on timetables.
Graham Cannon, 39, ambulance driver, Cardiff
To be honest I don’t really use the bus that often. I either walk or ride the bike. It’s only cause I had an appointment that I come by bus today, so it doesn’t really matter to me.
Alison Salter, 25, shop supervisor, Aberystwyth
I hope it makes more people walk around in Cardiff than take the bus. I walk by choice instead of taking buses anyway. I only take the bus if it’s a necessity, so I wouldn’t really be affected by it.
Shirley Yau, 26, head of operations, Cardiff
I never get the bus, I always walk or my boyfriend gives me a lift. But if I did use the bus the prices wouldn’t put me off.
Peter Falcon Evan, 34, boss, Cardiff
Everything is so expensive, and people with low incomes or whatever, they rely on buses to live their lives. Now they’re going up so what are they gonna do? So people are either not gonna work, or walk or cycle.
Samantha Coleman, 22, administrative assistant, Cardiff
It won’t affect my use of the bus cause I have no other means of travelling, and parking is expensive. If I could walk or cycle I would. But I buy a weekly ticket and I read that the price of that isn’t increasing.
Cardiff bus fares rise for the first time in years
Bus fares in Cardiff were raised for the first time in over two years on October 23, in response to the rising fuel prices.
Cardiff Bus announced earlier this month that some of the bus fares would rise. Four of the service’s fares have gone up: the ’day to go’ and single ticke prices for children and adults.
While Cardiff Bus regrets that rising fuel costs have led to increased bus fares, Managing Director David Brown remains very proud of the fact that not all ticket fares have been raised. Brown says in a press statement: “We are pleased to have managed to keep our season tickets for our regular customers at the same price, which we believe offer excellent value for money.”
