New Pathways for Trauma Sufferers
The SURE for Mental Health Project is run by New Pathways. New Pathways was established in 1993 in Merthyr Tydfil to support female victims of rape. In the years since it has grown to offer a range of support services for women, men, children and young people who have been affected by rape and sexual abuse.
New Pathways have offices situated throughout South Wales and offer counselling, helplines, mental health training, advocacy and support for people who have been victims of human trafficking.
If you or someone you know has been affected by rape or sexual abuse and you would like support, please contact New Pathways for more information.
The event will include free taster sessions in mindfulness, sensory grounding and music therapy and complementary therapies
A free wellbeing day to support people who want help managing their mental health will be held in Cardiff on 11 November.
The event, run by the SURE for Mental Health Project, will have information stalls about services in Cardiff and the opportunity for participants to take part in three taster workshops in sensory grounding, music therapy and mindfulness.
Complementary therapists offering reiki, Indian head massage and manicures will be present and there will be demonstrations of activities like martial arts and Zumba throughout the day.
The event is the first wellbeing day the service has offered and forms part of the SURE for Mental Health Project, a three-year Lottery Community Fund project to deliver mental health support to communities in South Wales.
Effective support for mental health is particularly important in Wales. The latest figures available from The Mental Health Foundation show that 13% of adults in Wales received treatment for a mental health problem in 2015, up 12% from the year before.
Jennie Dowsell, SURE for Mental Health Project Coordinator, said the wellbeing day will give people choices in the support they can access in Cardiff, and help broaden horizons physically and mentally.
“This event is open to everyone and anyone, but is useful in particular for anyone who would like to gain some extra techniques and support for managing their mental health,” said Jennie.
She added, “our workshops, delivered by our highly-trained trauma specialists, will offer techniques that people can use to help with their own mental health in their every day lives: particularly with anxiety and trauma.
“We are also offering holistic therapies, as we believe that different therapies and different techniques work for different people and we’d like to offer an opportunity for people to experience something that may be beneficial to their overall wellbeing.”
