The Boat Studio has been working in collaboration with ‘Arts on the Waterways’. The organisation works on innovative commissions for upcoming and established artists at key locations across rivers and canals in England and Wales. Working with international, national and regional venues inspired by waterways.
One of the other interesting pieces of work that the ‘Arts on the Waterways’ is involved with is the Floating Cinema in London. This project was run during the summer and brought talks and screening to London’s riverbanks.
Amber of The Boat Studios spoke about some of the various incentives happening on the UK canal network saying, “The waterway are having a real resurgence”.
Cardiff based artist, Amber Mottram is currently making her high school dream of converting a canal boat into an art studio, come true. The Boat Studio is still in its planning stages and Amber is currently running a crowd funding incentive to gain the funds to buy a boat which will then become a fully mobile, immersive artistic space.
The plan is to launch the project next year. Amber along with her friend and fellow artist Ellie Young, will take artists on a one week trip along the waterways between Cwmbran to Brecon. Along the route, they hope to showcase work to local communities along the riverbank as well as giving artists a chance to produce work in a completely unique place.
We spoke to Amber about the goals the Boat Studios. She said, “We want to engage with the local community along the waterways. The project is an opportunity to help artists, musicians and film makers but it is also about enhancing the Welsh waterways.”
As well as crowd funding the artistic duo are planning to a fundraising auction in Chapter on March 17 to create to capital the buy the new canal boat. Their crowd funding period ends on 17 December and sponsorship can be given through the official website.
