George Jeffreys: A brief history
George Jeffreys was born in Maesteg in 1889. Brought up in a family who belonged to the Welsh independent church, he converted during the Welsh Christian Revival at Shiloh Independent Chapel in Nantyfyllon in 1904.
Jeffreys travelled around the country preaching with his brother Stephen prior to founding the Elim church. Miraculous healings would take place in these meetings, leading Jeffreys to the foursquare belief that Jesus is saviour, healer, baptiser and coming king.
He founded the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance in Monoghan, Ireland in 1915.
He would go on to preach in front of large crowds across the United Kingdom. Many Elim churches were opened as a result of the belief’s popularity. The first Elim churches in Wales were in Llanelli and Dowlais. Jeffreys would lead the group until 1939.
He died in London in 1962, at the age of 73.

Elim Pentecostal church will celebrate its centenary in St David’s Hall this month.
Cardiff will host the celebrations on Friday 14 November – becoming one of six British cities to do so.
After a speech from general superintendent John Glass, there will be worship and musical performances from members of the local Elim churches.
Chris Cartwright, the church’s regional leader for Wales, said, “This is a celebration where we look back on Elim’s story over the past hundred years and look ahead.”
Video presentations will be used to remind attendees of the work of founder George Jeffreys, who preached in Cardiff venues such as Wood Street Congregational Church during the 1930s. These gatherings were instrumental in the growth of Elim churches in South Wales.
