Lunchtime concerts
The idea of lunchtime concerts came to fruition during World War II. With the National Gallery closed on 23 August 1939 and the evacuation of its pictures having already begun, the director Kenneth Clark was worried that it would cause a “cultural blackout”. The then famous pianist Myra Hess suggested using the Gallery as a venue for music, which gave rise to the concept of lunchtime concerts.

With workdays getting to be more stressful, a lunchtime concert is a good way to break away from the everyday humdrum.
In a nod to the upcoming festive season, on 1 December choristers and choral scholars from St John’s College and the Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral Choir will perform a Christmas concert in St David’s Hall from 1pm to 2pm.
If booked in advance, tickets cost between £4.75 and £5.75 though you’ll have to shell out an additional £1 for on-day bookings.
Steve Evans, an employee at St David’s Hall says they’ve been doing lunchtime concerts for many years: “There’s a coffee and tea stand and we offer sandwiches as well during the concert.”
