Why buy fair trade?
Jan Tucker, founder and executive director of Fair Do’s Siopa Teg in Canton, stresses the importance of avoiding products which are made in appalling conditions, as well as supporting farmers and craft workers in this tough economic climate.
She explains, “Through the fair trade system, they receive a fair return for their labour, and through long term partnerships they can plan for a secure future.”
Local fair trade seller Fair Do’s Siopa Teg in Canton has teamed up with Chapter Arts Centre for the first time to offer an evening of fair trade Christmas fun.
The shop, situated at 10 Llandaff Road, will extend its opening hours to 8pm this evening, when shoppers will be given the chance to purchase handmade and eco-friendly gifts for Christmas.
Visitors can then cross the road to Chapter’s cafe and enjoy a selection of fresh homemade food and drink, including fair trade mince pies and fair trade mulled wine.
Jan Tucker, founder of the shop, hopes that the event will have a lasting effect, “We hope people will think ‘fair trade’ first when it comes to buying birthday and wedding gifts through the year.”
