WHAT IS AMERICAN INTERIOR?
After the success of Seperado!, his previous “investigative concert tour” around Welsh Patagonia, Gruff Rhys set off on a new journey exploring Welsh culture and heritage in 2012.
The Super Furry Animals front man travelled across the middle of America in search of the grave of his ancestor, John Evans.
Convinced of the existence of a tribe of Welsh speaking Native Americans, descended from the Welsh Prince Madog, Evans had left Wales in search of them in 1792. The eccentric revolutionary was last seen in Spain in 1799, and was known then as Don Juan Evans.
American Interior sees Gruff and his John Evans puppet follow in his ancestor’s footsteps, searching for answers as to what happened to him and recording music inspired by the journey and by Evans’s dramatic story.
Did he ever found the Welsh speaking tribe? What drove him to leave his homeland behind and travel thousands of miles in search of glory? And what finally became of the Welsh explorer?
At his Cardiff performances Gruff will not only try to answer these questions in his PowerPoint presentation but showcase his creative talents, accompanying the story with his own soundtrack.
If you aren’t lucky enough to get tickets or if you want a sneak peak of what to expect from his Cardiff shows, make sure you see Gruff’s tour documentary of the same name.
Tickets for Gruff Rhys’s homecoming shows in December have nearly sold out – but an extra date means there’s still time to catch him at a Cardiff theatre.
Whilst Gruff’s first two performances of his critically acclaimed American Interior tour at the Sherman Theatre are fully booked there are still some limited tickets available for the extra date on 20 December.
The shows will even have a seasonal twist. Revealing that he would perform on the set of the Sherman Christmas show Gruff, who is currently in Niagara Falls, said: “I can’t wait for these Cardiff shows – I’ve no idea what it will look like but it should add to the occasion!”
Gruff will also be joined by The Boo Radleys’ Martin Carr.
