Heledd Jones chatted with Alt.Cardiff about her experience with BBC Blast and how this inspired her to help young people in Cardiff.
How did you find out about BBC Blast?
I was always interested in fashion and was just browsing the internet when I saw it advertised so thought I would give it a go!
What did the competition involve?
The idea was to make something ethical so out of scrap material or recycled material. I made a denim wedding dress which won me the coveted prize!
What happened once you had won?
There were two winners and we were luckily enough to go to Paris and have three of my outfits showcased in an ethical fashion show. We worked with designer Pierre Gauodi on these designs.
How has it inspired you?
I always use ethical fabrics in the classes that I host here at Llanover and this weekend I am also taking the students to Paris to experience fashion in different cultures.
Llanover Hall hosts an evening called ‘Make-Up Made-Up & Model Material’ every Thursday for budding models, makeup artists and fashion designers to develop their talent.
The classes are a hit with young people in Cardiff, with success stories of one student gaining a place at London College of Fashion and another auditioning for Britain’s Next Top Model.
The idea was first suggested by Heledd Jones, 25, who already has a success story in fashion.
After winning a chance to showcase her designs in Paris with BBC Blast six years ago her passion has remained strong, “Ideally I would love to work with young students and fashion everyday as it can be quite a dangerous industry. But here they can practice their ideas in a safe environment.”
