Local coffee shop condemns chains

A local coffee shop owner has warned that the invasion of coffee chains could soon envelope the authenticity of the traditional Italian coffee shop.

Coffee: the authentic way!

With the emergence of Coffee Number 1 in Cardiff to rival perennial coffee powerhouses Starbucks, Costa and Café Nero, the presence of the traditional coffee shop is in danger of being lost.

“I hugely disagree with the claims of authenticity from the big chains out there,” says Dan Patching, owner of The College House.

“The multi-national company cannot possibly replicate the authenticity of smaller, more focused shops like us, and it is up to places like us to stay unique.”

Patching’s warnings come as Starbucks has recently become enveloped in a tax-evasion row by allegedly falsely declaring losses to save payment.
