A rich cultural heritage
Punjabi’s from both India and Pakistan who have migrated to the UK in the twentieth century have brought with them a rich cultural heritage. This heritage is regularly paraded at the Punjabi Mehfil event at the Wales Millennium Centre. Well-known Punjabi performers such as Chaman Lal Chaman and Sathi Ludhianwi have both been present at meetings of the Mehfil and have contributed their own work to the group.
Chaman Lal Chaman is a London based poet, lyricist and broadcaster who has written hits for films such as Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice and in 2010 won the Asian Achievers Gold Award.
Sathi Ludhianwi is a freelance broadcaster and journalist who commentates on political and social issues. It is performers like these which give the Mehfil such a good name and continue to influence its growing popularity.

The Punjabi Mehfil, a tri-monthly event celebrating Punjabi culture, has recently experienced a steep rise in popularity. The Mehfil started out in 2008 mainly as a poetry event but has since expanded to cover all manner of cultural prose and has recently relocated to the Millennium Centre to account for the extra numbers.
The group’s organiser Mr Channi Kaler said, “Everybody contributes something to the event, somebody sings, somebody tells a joke, it is a way people can come and carry out their own skill.” Attendances were low in the first two years but it was when Mr Kaler first started encouraging those from the Pakistani as well as the Indian Punjabi community to get involved that the group began to grow so rapidly.
