Rebel Bingo’s Ryan Vermillion speaks to Alt.Cardiff
The Underground Rebel Bingo Club will be hosting another event in Cardiff on November 15 and will announce the location 24 hours before the event. Tickets are available via the website currently priced at £3, however prices increase closer to the event.
Ryan Vermillion from the Underground Rebel Bingo Club spoke to alt.Cardiff about how the popular club night got started in a church hall basement.
“We never really meant for it to end up as a club night. We had got drunk in a church hall basement when we found a bingo wheel, we didn’t know the rules so we just sort of made them up. Eventually we had to move out of the basement as too many people wanted to play, it was like a monster we couldn’t control or keep secret. From then on it has sort of promoted itself, once you get a taste, it’s all you want to do.”
What have you done to bring bingo to a new generation?
“Bingo is a tense game. It doesn’t matter who you are, once those number start getting called everybody gets in the zone, it’s an emotional game. Rebel Bingo isn’t for your granny. There are no seats. It’s loud.”
What sort of music can we can expect on the night?
“There is no defined musical direction, we try to play the best songs from a few genres. You can expect to hear a bit of Hip-Hop, RnB, Punk Rock, 90’s Pop, Dubstep and Indie.”
Nightclub Bingo becomes a surprise success in Cardiff
Wales’ favorite OAP pastime is undergoing a face-lift but the promoters behind the game’s resurgence admit that the night’s popularity has come as a shock.
Currently on the road as part of a 12 date UK tour, the Underground Rebel Bingo Club are quickly amassing a cult following with their combination of live DJ sets and games of bingo.
The Rebels arrive at a secret Cardiff location on November 15 but having hosted a sell out show at Clwb Ifor Bach in February, promoter Ryan Vermillion admits that the night’s success was something of a surprise.
“We just started playing,” says Ryan. “We didn’t know the rules so we just made them up. We never really meant for it to end up as a club night.”
