Literature Wales is on a mission to make Roald Dahl’s nationality as well-known as his beloved books. The Cardiff born storyteller is being remembered with the help of Invent your Event. This outreach and funding scheme aims to encourage people of all ages across Wales to engage with reading, creative writing and literature. City of the Unexpected, a nation-wide performance by the National Theatre Wales will celebrate Dahl’s life. Additionally, illustrator, Quentin Blake aims to honour the iconic writer by exhibiting illustrations of his books. Primary school children across Wales are also being encouraged by the Land of Song project to remember the author through the medium of song. A hundred years of pure imagination will be celebrated next year in commemoration of the centenary of Roald Dahl’s birth.
The 13 September 2016 marks a hundred years since the writer’s birth, and Cardiff is already preparing to celebrate the national treasure.
The Norwegian Church on Cardiff Bay where Dahl worshipped as a child, is working with the Welsh Government and Literature Wales to raise awareness of Dahl’s achievements.
Tony Caley-Burnell, conference and events co-ordinator for Cardiff Council said: “We celebrate Roald Dahl Day every year on the Sunday closest to Roald Dahl’s birthday.”
Next year will be extra special, with a free family fun day being held at the Church to encourage the public to believe in magic for a hundred more years.
