The Reduced Shakespeare Company began life in 1981 in California by touring their abridged version of Romeo and Juliet. They soon added Hamlet to their shows and by the late 1980s had been invited to perform at the Edinburgh Festival, after which they expanded their repertoire to include Shakespeare’s complete works.
Since that time they have written Completely Hollywood, which takes on 197 of the most critically acclaimed films of all time, and tackled ‘every sport ever played on every continent in the entire history of the world’ in The Complete World of Sports, according to their website.
Other works of theirs cover the Bible, world history, the United States of America and the Lost television series. Their output has appeared on radio, television and DVD, and they have performed at the White House and London’s West End, as well as at other venues across the globe.
37 Shakespeare plays in 97 minutes! Blink and you’ll miss this fast-paced show
It is sometimes said that attention spans are shorter these days, yet one theatre group is determined to show that Shakespeare can still hold sway in the internet age – by performing 37 of the Bard’s plays in 97 minutes.
The Reduced Shakespeare Company is bringing its Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama on 12 November. But how do they condense some of the English language’s greatest literary works into such a short time?
“We cut out all the boring bits and get right to the sex and the violence”, explains Gary Fannin of the American troupe. “Julius Caesar is done and buried in about 60 seconds. Hamlet on the other hand takes all of the second act to cover.”
