The organiser of Last Mic Standing, Sean Knox (above), gave me the insider information on which acts were tipped to win the competition.
Frank Thomas – Spoken Word Artist
A spoken word artist that brings a serious angle to his act, addressing issues like relationships, the government and politics. Sean says, “He’s the sort of act who’s quite hit and miss; people either love him or hate him”. Frank has reached the quarter finals of the competition.
When Worlds Collide – Band
A highly rated Indie/Hip Hop/Electric/Rock/Funk band, When Worlds Collide is tipped to go far in the competition. Sean says, “When I started the event I fantasised about how cool it would be if a band that eventually became really famous started out winning small competitions like Last Mic Standing. I reckon this band is one of the best in the tournament.”
Beat-Spoke – Beat Box Improv Comedians
A free styling rap/beat-box group that takes objects and ideas from the audience and use them to rap spontaneously. Sean says, “They’re fresh and good fun, they are really good at what they do.”
Last Mic Standing is an open microphone knockout tournament held weekly at Ten Feet Tall. The competition is set to continue until a single act emerges victorious.
The tournament, which has been running since September, is currently in the second round with a number of acts already knocked out and some clear favourites emerging.
The tournament gives any live act the chance to perform and compete. The organiser of the event, Sean Knox, said, “We’ve had bands, poets, stand-ups, improvs, singer-songwriters, rappers, beat-boxers and a clown with a guitar.”
More information about the tournament including the dates of the events and the acts still in the competition can be found on the Last Mic Standing Facebook page. The next round takes place 25 October.
