The Little Match Girl
Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale details the hardships of a young girl, trying to sell match sticks on New Year’s Eve. She has no luck and sits defeated in the snow. She lights a match and begins to see images, such as lit fires, turkey dinners and Christmas trees, each one disappearing when the match dies out. Eventually she sees her grandmother who passed away. She lights all of her matches in order to keep her grandmother with her. The grandmother stays and takes the girl into the light with her as she sadly passes away with the last match.
The Young Company will use candlelight in their performance to reconstruct the match light in the story.

The Young Company performance group will present an original rework of Hans Christian Anderson’s story, The Little Match Girl.
Young Company is a partnership between the Wales Millennium Centre and The Big Talent School. The group comprises of 7-16 year-olds who meet every Saturday during term time to learn West End standard stage skills.
Visitor service team leader Hannah Owen Griffiths said the group is all about, “building confidence, making friends and having fun along the way.”
The group’s interpretation of the tragic tale of The Little Match Girl will use puppetry and candlelight to recreate the touching story on stage.
The performance will take place on December 11 with a matinee show at 2.30pm and an evening show at 6pm. Tickets cost £6.
