Many of the Christmas markets stalls will offer Welsh products and ingredients.
However, for those looking to try something a little more exotic the Melted Cheese Company may have the answer.
Serving raclette cheese made in the French alps with a combination of different sides, the Melted Cheese Co have the ingredients for a real winter warmer.
I spoke to the owner Simon Matthews about this years market and his personal recommendations:
Q) Have you featured at Cardiff’s Christmas market previously?
A) “This is our third year here. We love the Welsh atmosphere and the people just make it for us.”
Q) Do you think that you offer something different to food fans at the Christmas market?
A) “We try to. Traditionally, Raclette is an alpine dish served mainly in restaurants in the mountains.
It has become more popular recently and is starting to spread through the street food scene.
For those people who are not too sure if Raclette is their thing, we offer nachos, mac and cheese and cheesy garlic bread.”
Q) Are you excited to be a part of the market this year?
A) “We love it! It is our favourite Christmas market, the people of Cardiff are brilliant.”
Q) You must be anticipating a busy few weeks?
A) “Hopefully! We have quite a few regular customers who come back every year and we would like to be able to convince a few more people to give raclette a go.
It is a pretty theatrical way to prepare food. We get a lot of people that just stop to watch or film it and you can smell the cheese cooking from quite far away.”
Q) What would you recommend to a first time raclette tryer?
A) “If you are a major cheese lover you need to try the raclette prepared traditionally with potatoes if it is a new dish for you. But if you are in the mood for a classic winter warmer, we would always go for raclette, mac and Cheese topped with crispy bacon; it is definitely our go to festive treat”
The Melted Cheese Co will be at the Christmas market until 23 December
Christmas market offers a real taste of Wales during the festive period as food and drink businesses flood capital
Cardiff’s Christmas market will feature stalls from over 200 businesses. A majority of which will be run by Welsh stall owners.
Food and drink businesses from all over the country have gravitated to the capital for this event.
Sarah Perkins of Calon Lan Cakes said, “We are looking forward to meeting other Welsh businesses at the market and working alongside them.”
“It is always very busy, and the stalls look so amazing.”
Catrin Komor is the founder of Fwdge. A confectionary company from Bridgend that uses artisan Welsh ingredients to achieve its signature flavour.
Catrin said “The Cardiff Christmas market is iconic; it is a pleasure to be involved”.
“Especially when the organizers go out of their way to source local producers. It makes giving a gift made by hand close to where you live you that much easier!” she continued.
Fwdge use ingredients like Anglesey sea salt and Penderyn whisky in their fudge.
Catrin believes that supporting other Welsh businesses is important and adds authenticity to her product.
“It adds a really personal touch if you are a Welsh person giving a box of fudge to a non-Welsh friend” she said.
Eating locally sourced food reduces the environmental impact of production. Fwdge focus on being environmentally responsible as a company.
Catrin said “All packaging used for the fudge is sourced from eco-friendly sites, recyclable materials and is compostable. I don’t use any plastic packaging and use paper bags for customers which are recyclable too.”
The Fwdge stall will be there from December 15 until December 21.
Whatever you fancy, the Christmas market will have something to satisfy it. Snowdonia cheeses provide a selection of hampers while Severn Cider, Bangon Brewery and Celtic country wines offer many alcoholic drinks.
