History
Ignatz Salamon lived with his wife and three young children in Rohrbach, Austria, and ran a small general store. However, when the Nazis began advancing across Europe, he decided that life was no longer safe in the little village and the family chose to move to Wales.
Ignatz opened up a new store in 1947 on Bridge Street, Cardiff, and two of his sons, Otto and Walter, also helped run the family business.
Sadly, Ignatz passed away in 1963 but his sons saw the business go from strength to strength. Even when Bridge Street was compulsorily purchased by Cardiff Council in 1981, Otto and Walter (Wally) did not give up.
Otto opened a store on Caroline Street and Wally settled on Royal Arcade and, of course, chose a new name for his new shop.
Wally’s son, Steven, joined the business in 1993 and the father and son continued working together until Wally passed away in 2008.
Steven said, “I think my grandfather, Ignatz, would be proud of what we have achieved – I don’t expect he would recognise the business. We expanded through the recession and offer a much bigger variety of food.”
Wally’s Kaffeehaus
Wally’s Kaffeehaus is a Viennese coffee house situated above the delicatessen. They have a unique menu of continental breakfasts, sandwiches, cakes, patisseries, and Italian gelato, while they boast Austrian coffees that are rarely found in the UK.
Christmas
At Wally’s Delicatessen customers can choose from an exciting range of Christmas gifts, including Spanish polvorones, German gingerbread biscuits and Italian panettone. They are also selling festive hampers with a variety of contents, ranging from Greek foods to Polish products. If customers do not have time to visit the delicatessen then they need not worry, as the products are available for festive shoppers to buy online.
A Cardiff delicatessen has seen customers go crazy for continental Christmas food, over 70 years after the store’s founders fled Nazi Europe.
Wally’s Delicatessen, Royal Arcade, has seen a huge demand for their Christmas produce, selling everything from Italian panettone to German stollen.
The Salamon family abandoned their Austrian delicatessen when war broke out, re-opening their business in Cardiff in 1947.
A far cry from war-torn Europe, the store is a popular meeting place for ethnic minorities, while the team hopes their Christmas products will secure customer loyalty all year.
Owner Steven Salamon said, “Wally’s Delicatessen provides great gifts because, instead of locally sourced food, we import authentic products that are unavailable in supermarkets.
“Elderly people who visited when they were young now bring their own grandchildren Christmas shopping.”
