Fred Keenor (1894-1972)
“Fred was a working class lad from Cardiff who was badly injured in the awful Battle of the Somme. It was feared he would never play again but he recovered from his injuries to lead Cardiff City to FA Cup glory – the only time the famous trophy has been taken out of England. Fred also led Wales to the Home International Championships. We believe it is important to recognise our working class heroes and not just the rich and powerful. Many football grounds have statues of their heroes – Cardiff deserves one as well.” – Phillip Nifild

The curry night will commemorate a local sporting hero
A charity is holding a curry night in Cardiff this week to commemorate a local football legend.
The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust will hold a curry night on Thursday 17 November at Cardiff City Stadium in Leckwith. All proceeds will go towards a statue of Fred Keenor, the captain who led the bluebirds to FA Cup victory
in 1927.
Dilwar Ali of Nahin Spice Centre will lend his culinary skills and there will be music from local folk musician Frank Hennessey.
Member of the board of trustees Phillip Nifield said: “Keenor is undoubtedly one of Cardiff’s most iconic sporting heroes. We don’t feel his achievements have been properly recognised. A statue will help put that right.”
The trust hopes to raise enough funds by April.
