How important do you think farmers’ markets are to the local community?
Alastair Brook, 29, Unemployed, Danes Court
Farmer’s markets give local people the chance to sell to a wider market. The Riverside markets and especially the Roath market attract a lot of customers.
Emily Hemnessy, 23, Business Developer, Cardiff Bay
I think they’re pretty essential in maintaining economical growth. Fresh produce is coming from us locally, and it’s all about supporting that.
Kate Brown, 33, Retail, Cork, Ireland
I think it’s very important to support local produce. There’s a real movement towards wanting fresh and decent food, and knowing where everything is coming from […] much more expensive, but it’s such a treat.
Ruberto Pastore, 32, Book Seller, Pontprennau
Anything that can fund the local economy is really helpful.
Veronica Bosbory, 22, Designer, London
There are a lot of big companies who are trying to take over the markets. The smaller the community, the more important it is.
Nick Pendry, 24, Bridgend Council Worker, Cardiff Bay
I’ve never seen any, really, advertised around. I’m sure if I saw something advertised I’d probably go. It definitely needs more commercial advertisement.
Bettina Smith, 45, Mental Health Worker, Cross Keys
I think they’re very important. People want a bigger variety, to be closer to nature and have more choice […] I have an issue that sometimes they are too expensive.
Questioning the importance of farmers’ markets yields a passionate public response
Farmers’ markets are often seen as a way of promoting sustainable living and locally sourced goods – but what do people really think?
The answer, it would appear, is that the majority of people hold them to great value.
Following a previous week’s article on Castle Quarter Market’s possible closure, the question of how important these farmers’ markets are to the local community was put to a variety of people.
Many think of the markets as an essential pillar in supporting not only local produce and the local economy, but also the local community as a whole. They are seen as a source of decent, fresh food, as well as an essential platform from which sellers can reach a wider audience.
