A Q&A with Colin Brooker, one half of the Sorrento’s team
What inspired you to start a café?On my travels abroad I’d always enjoyed coffee everywhere, so I wanted to create somewhere that served decent coffee in a nice relaxed atmosphere.
How would you describe the style of your food?We like to take basic food and put it together to create something different
What is your favourite thing on your menu?Probably the avocado stacker, which is smashed avocado on toast with a poached egg and smoked salmon on top, but sprinkled with lime and chilli flakes to give it a bit of a twist.
How would you describe the theme of your cafes? The café has a 50s theme to it which. We’re trying to create a home from home for everyone to feel comfortable in; we even have games like dominos and cards on the tables for people to play!
What is it like working with your son? It’s brilliant! From a business perspective it’s good because you’ve got two aspects of skills: my seasoned business mind and Simon’s modern thinking.
Are you holding any special events in the future?Every Thursday we are planning to host an 80s disco night, where the staff come dressed in 80s clothes!
A father and son have opened their second café in Cardiff.
Colin Brooker, 57, and his son Simon, 24, welcomed their first customers into the second branch of Sorrento’s two weeks ago.
The opening of the second Sorrento’s on Salisbury Road, Cathays comes after the success of their first café, which is situated near Roath Park.
The duo decided to set up their first cafe after Colin had returned from working in Australia and Simon had graduated from university.
Sorrento’s is open from breakfast until dinner and serves a variety of food and beverages, ranging from artisan burgers to luxury milkshakes.
Colin says, “Working with my son has really drawn us together. The family run business helps to create somewhere that’s comfortable for everyone and compliments our home style cooking with a modern twist.”
