What are some typical Mexican Christmas dishes? Here’s Alt. Cardiff’s pick of the top 5:
1. Best for tradition: Pavo
Pavo (turkey) is native to Mexico and a popular choice for a Christmas Eve dinner. It is usually roasted or served with a hot chili sauce.
2. Best for taste: Bacalao
Bacalao is dried salted codfish and starts appearing in markets and grocery shops as Christmas approaches. It is often prepared with tomatoes, olives and potatoes.
3. Best for chili lovers: Pozole
Pozole is hominy soup made with pork or chicken and liberally seasoned with chili and garlic.
4. Best for ease: Ensalada de Noche Buena
This ensalada (salad) contains lettuce and beetroot, as well as a variety of other ingredients according to personal preference – such as apple, carrot, orange and pecans. Served as part of the Christmas Eve dinner, its green and red colours make it look particularly festive.
5. Best for a sweet tooth: Bunuelos
This crispy fried fritter is sprinkled with sugar or doused in syrup. After eating it, it is traditional to make a wish and then throw the plate to the ground where it smashes into tiny pieces.
Cardiff’s well-known quirky café Milgi is hosting its monthly art and curry club on 10 December. In keeping with its Mexican-themed Christmas menu, this month’s activity involves making Mexican festive papel picado bunting.
The evening begins at 7pm with a bowl of veggie curry and rice. Participants are then given time to make the papel picado which is a Mexican folk art and made out of decorative paper cut into elaborate designs. A sum of £5 will cover all the food and art materials.
Hannah, one of the managers at Milgi, says: “We wanted to put on a fun art class which is relaxed and sociable. It fits in with our Mexican Christmas menu which we think makes our vegetarian restaurant more interesting and enduring”.
