Bake the good stuff
Parsons is a family-run bakers that has been going for over 100 years, and during this time it has transformed from home deliveries by horse and cart, to running shops in 35 different locations across the South West and Monmouthshire.
The newest branch is located on Heol-y-Deri in Rhiwbina, making it partner to the first Parsons that opened in Cardiff on Wellfield Road earlier this year.
The bakery offers a range of different products, with traditional pastries like lardy cake and custard slices on the menu, as well as their own recipes such as ‘Moon Cake’ and ‘Australian Crunch’.
Manager of the Rhiwbina branch Milly Clarke says all of their products are freshly made, with custard slices and iced-buns being their bestsellers. However, it is lardy cake that really seems to play with people’s emotions when they visit the shop.
“I love seeing people’s reactions when they see a cake they haven’t tasted in ages and it brings back memories for them,” she said.
Residents’ seal of approval
The bakery has also got the thumbs up from residents, with Rhiwbina local Graham Morris describing it as a “much needed addition” to the existing range of shops in the Village.
Similarly, Jayne Cowan, an Independent councillor who represents the ward said the bakery was a “welcome asset” to Rhiwbina, and commented on the friendliness and knowledge of all the staff there.
The Parsons family have just opened their second bakery in Cardiff after unveiling their new shop in Rhiwbina Village.
The artisan bakers offer everything from pastries to pasties, and dedicate themselves to working with local companies and produce.
And with the business off to a flying start, the Rhiwbina staff show no fear of competition from the Greggs bakery that has also just opened in nearby Llanishen.
Manager of the bakery Milly Clarke said, “We’ve had a such rush of customers since opening, especially from school children and the surrounding shops.”
She also added that the best thing about working in a bakery is being able to transport someone right back to their childhood with a product.
Both the shops in Roath and Rhiwbina appear to be just the beginning of managing director Nick Parsons’ plans for a series of bakeries throughout Cardiff.
