“I prefer going to family run businesses over places like KFC as I think the food is much nicer and there’s more variety.”
Tracey Green, 53, retail assistant, Cathays
“keeping local businesses is important for the community as they generally provide us with a friendly service unlike fast food chains.”

“Fast food chains need to stop opening around the city. We already have so many there’s no need for any more.”
KFC’s development plans may have a harsh effect on businesses as they plan to open four new stores around Cardiff
The many fast food chains in Cardiff may be a convenience for those not wanting to walk further than a few minutes to get their end of the night fast food fix, however, KFC’s development plans may have a negative impact on small businesses as they continue to be affected by the ever growing number of fast food chains opening in the city.
Ebrahem Safi, owner of Uncle Sam’s, a family owned takeaway in Cathay’s has stated that, “People are looking for cheap, easy options they are familiar with which is why they go to fast food chains such as KFC and unfortunately we can’t stop them.”
Despite concerns that the KFC development plans will affect small businesses, the company believes it will bring a range of local investments which will provide people with jobs as well as award winning training and commitment. Chris Holmes, chief development officer at KFC UK and Ireland has commented, “We’re always looking to open in new locations to meet demand from our fans and make a positive difference in every community.”
According to the KFC development website, the four locations KFC plans to open at are: Cardiff City Centre, Cardiff Bay, Cardiff Culverhouse Cross and Llanishen. John Peach, a senior property acquisition and relationship manager at KFC has explained that, “We wouldn’t normally open more than three stores in one year but it would be a shame to miss an opportunity where we can provide facilities for customers at their convenience.”
