Q&A with Age Cymru’s Communications Officer, Iwan Roberts:
- What’s special about the Spread the Warmth Christmas concert?
“This is our third Spread the Warmth Christmas concert and it’s just gone from strength to strength. It’s always well received and always sells out, so it’s one of our landmark events as a charity. It’s held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, which is a beautiful venue, and perfect for getting people into the festive spirit.”
- What is Spread the Warmth?
“Spread the Warmth is our winter campaign which is split into two parts. The first is providing winter health and wellbeing advice to the elderly. Cold is potentially a big problem for old people and it can cause cold-related illnesses, such as strokes and heart attacks, so it’s very important to provide them with care and knowledge.”
- And the second part of the campaign?
“The second part is fundraising. We provide a limited number of Winter Celebration Grants to groups of elderly people around Wales who meet every so often, so that they can organise a Christmas treat or get-together. This gives people something to look forward to in the winter months.”
- What will concert funds go towards?
“The concert supports the whole campaign. As statistics show, 75,000 older people in Wales report feeling lonely. Age UK provides comfort and company which aids their physical and emotional health.”

Age Cymru will host a festive concert to fundraise for the 11,000 Welsh elderly who will heartbreakingly spend Christmas alone this year.
Supported by Western Power Distribution, the concert is part of Age Cymru’s Spread the Warmth campaign, which helps elderly people facing loneliness and isolation throughout the festive period.
The concert will take place on 26 November at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and will feature seasonal favourites from the Morriston Orpheus Choir (singing in the video below), Charlie and Lizzie Lovell-Jones and Ysgol y Wern.
Funds raised through ticket sales will help provide winter health advice and Winter Celebration Grants for local elderly groups around Wales to organise a “festive get-together”.
The charity’s communications officer, Iwan Roberts, said: “This is our third Spread the Warmth Christmas concert and it is one of our landmark events as a charity. The feedback is always great and it gets people into the festive spirit.”
