Archbishop appeals for larger donations

Parishioners are being asked to increase their weekly donations to reduce a budget deficit at Llandaff cathedral.

The cathedral needs more income in a bid to safeguard the future of its ministry and tackle a deficit of £81,000.

Archbishop of Wales Dr Barry Morgan, who is also the bishop of Llandaff, said: “I am encouraging regular worshippers to increase their weekly giving and to do so through its Gift Direct scheme, a direct debit account which ensures planned and regular giving, allowing the Cathedral to budget properly.”

Over half of the current annual income of the cathedral comes from donations from parishioners.

Llandaff resident Peter Williams commented: “I am more than willing to increase my donation. I will do what it takes to help my community.”

Dr Barry Morgan further explains why it is important for parishioners to donate. He said: “The responsibility for funding the life and work of any church falls first to its members, those people who make up the church in a community.”

Llandaff councillor Kirsty Davies comments: “I am sorry that Llandaff Cathedral is suffering in the same way many other organisations are in the current climate. However, cathedrals up and down the country are showing what can be achieved if they reach out to the community.”

The cathedral has suggested a weekly donation sum of £8.56, which is less than the average amount of £8.73 given across the church in Wales. The church encourages worshippers to give 5% of their take home pay.
