We took to the streets and asked the people of Cardiff what their thoughts and opinions on the council’s job on redoing the roads.
“Do you think the council has done a good job on looking after our roads and why?”
Simone Miche, 22, assistant editor, Swindon
“Well mostly because if you’re cycling around Cardiff, like I do, you can’t get around them. As the roads are uneven it’s really uncomfortable and I think it’s really dangerous, especially for cyclists. So, I don’t think they’re doing a very good job.”
Ciaran Caple-Williams, 19, volunteer, Llandaff
“Down in my area in Llandaff North, they’ve resurfaced roads and then left the job unfinished. It just causes more hassle to traffic and pedestrians as well. I also find that a lot of the same part of the roads tend to have reoccurring potholes where they’ve redone the roads and I find it quite annoying, actually very annoying.”
Kate Evans, 18, waitress, Cardiff
“I’m not going to lie I think it seems a lot of the time that they’re redoing the roads for no apparent reason where there are a lot better things to do with the money.”
Ashley Jones, 29, supervisor, Cardiff
“It’s a pain in a butt to come in and out of the town, with all the resurfacing it causes a lot of traffic.”
Helen McGill, 65, retired, Cwmbran
“I haven’t been to Cardiff for a while and I came by bus today and as far as I can see they seemed okay, the roads are well maintained and weren’t uneven.”
Steve Hill, 49, premises manager, Brynmawr
“Considering the funding the council gets I suppose for a capital city, it should be a lot better. Personally as I live up in the valleys, the roads compared to Cardiff are nowhere as bad.”
Cardiff city is currently undergoing a road-resurfacing programme. The major road resurfacing work started on 1 October and is estimated to finish on the 22 October. The resurfacing is an on-going programme of works and it may be delayed or cancelled particularly during poor weather conditions.
Alistair Love, Highways & Waste Management, says, “We know that resurfacing the roads in Cardiff will cause an inconvenience to some, but having essential road works are simply inevitable.”
The programme is being funded through the Council’s budget and the Welsh Local Government Borrowing Initiative. Under this initiative, Cardiff Council is investing an additional amount of approximately £5 million in road resurfacing during 2012 and 2013, and a further £10 million in highway improvements over the following two years.
