The Green Valley Alliance are a collection of both business and residential communities that are passionate about raising awareness of the impact of open cast mining on health, quality of life, economic prosperity and areas of natural beauty in Wales.
There are a mixture of both negatives and positives associated with the potential construction of the mine in Nant Llesg.
Negatives:
1. Profit goes directly to the developers and not the local community
2. Current businesses in the community would be likely to relocate due to the negative impacts of having an open cast mine in close proximity
3. Environmental issues
4. Health issues
Positives:
1. Job creation: 239 full time jobs will be created, 260 jobs in total
2. The company accredited to the mine (Miller Argent) will plough £13m into the mine and local community projects each year
The proposal for Miller Argent to create an open cast mine in Nant Llesg near Rhymney is causing a stir among local communities.
The Green Valley Alliance is fighting the motion saying that the negatives vastly outweigh the positives of creating 260 new jobs for the community.
They have claimed in a report that the mine will cause a loss of £28 million to the local economy.
Mitchell Field employs 140 people at Richards and Appleby Ltd in Rhymney and said, “the evidence we have found from looking at similar mines across the UK indicates the impact of a mine like this would not just be on people’s quality of life and health.
“It would also have a significant effect on the environment and the long term economic future of the area.
