Thé Pot Café 138 Crwys Road, Cardiff, CF24 4NR. Open 9-6pm Mon, 9-7:30pm Tues-Fri, 10-6pm Weekend. Find their menu here.
The dispute over Thé Pot’s outside furniture was initially tweeted on the @ThePotCafe page:
“Subsequent to @cardiffcouncil telling me there is no space for tables outside the cafe, I arrive this morning to find- pic.twitter.com/Wiltnbwz.”
“So now their argument that there needs to be 2m space between cafe and pavement for pushchairs is now true, they have won the argument!”
“There was precisely 3.5m space between the chairs and the pavement edge, so I was legally entitled to place tables outside.”
“I cannot believe that Cardiff Council has done this so that their argument now has credence. That’s 4 spaces taken away from my business.”
Other Twitter members then spoke out in support of the local business:
@dextergreen – “If further proof is needed that @cardiffcouncil only care about big business and not independents then take a look at @ThePotCafe’s timeline.”
@goldlionstudio – “@ThePotCafe Spiteful & stupid. Don’t they want biz to flourish & do well? Don’t they want us to spend our £ in places we love &are proud of?”
@lordpad – “Well done @cardiffcouncil for bullying independent businesses like @ThePotCafe. Seems unless you’re a huge chain you don’t stand a chance.”
@H_paz – “@cardiffcouncil as a tax payer, I’m demanding the bike rails that have been installed outside @thepotcafe be removed.”
@FrauLeo – “@ThePotCafe As much as I appreciate any bike rails being put up I’m speechless! Why not putting them up 5m up or down the Rd?!”
@kbateman – “@thepotcafe so there we go then, enough complaints to the council via http://ow.ly/e9ifm or their c2c line may get the bike rails sorted:)”
@MicheleSeren – “@ThePotCafe As one of our favourite places in Cardiff. Wanted to let you know you have our support.”
Cardiff Council subsequently responded to the complaints and the matter was resolved:
“1/2 Regarding Bike Hoops, Crwys Road, @ThePotCafe The Council understands the concerns raised in this matter and will be contacting…
2/2 … The café directly to assist resolution of these issues. (Re Bike Hoops, Crwys Road, @ThePotCafe ) Thank you. Diolch.”
@marcheatley – “Just had an email from @cardiffcouncil about the bike racks that appeared outside @ThePotCafe that will soon be disappearing! Great News!!!”
@ThePotCafe – “@Seebeebies @marcheatley that’s ace! They’re moving them 5 yards to the left. Thank you so much for your support you guys x”
A local café’s dispute with Cardiff Council over the placement of outside furniture was resolved, thanks to an overwhelming reaction on Twitter.
Early on Monday morning Thé Pot owner Natalie Eddins tweeted that, subsequent to being told she could not place chairs and tables outside her property due to a lack of space, bicycle rails had been erected outside her shop.
The resulting response on Twitter was a massive one, with supporters pledging their loyalty to Ms Eddins’s business and complaining to the council through an online form.
Following the complaints the council has agreed to move the rails five yards to the left. Ms Eddins sent the news to her supporters on Twitter saying, “Thank you so much for your support you guys.”
