Cardiff Foodbank has been run by project manager, Ian Purcell, and groups of volunteers since April 2009 as a franchise of the Trussell Trust and is part of the National Foodbank Network.
Run from a warehouse in Ely the project operates via four different foodbanks across the city, distributing food to those that are experiencing financial hardship and are struggling to feed themselves and their families.
Food is donated by individuals, schools, businesses and churches and is issued in the form of food vouchers via professional care workers such as charities, churches, social services and health visitors.

Delays and changes in benefits increase the use of local foodbank service
Cardiff Foodbank has seen a 60% rise in its use in the last year.
During the financial year of 2011 the project helped 3,792 individuals but since April has served a record amount of 2,500 people.
Most of those fed in Cardiff are as a result of benefit delays and cuts. Benefit delays account for over 1000 of those that have used the service in the last six months.
Discussing the circumstances that led people to use the foodbank, project manager, Ian Purcell, said, “we have seen an increase in folded businesses leaving people in positions they never expected to be in but then again nobody ever imagines having to use a foodbank.”
