Should Ched Evans be allowed to play football again?
Joseph Peskett, 21, Jobseeker, Cathays
“If he is a convicted rapist then he should not be allowed to play, but I will reserve any judgment until his appeal is heard.”
Judith Davies, 47, Nurse, Carmarthen
“Very difficult to give a definitive answer. On the one hand he has been convicted of a criminal offence, but on the other it is his job. Other convicts come out of jail and return to their work. Also until his appeal people should reserve judgment.”
Peter Jackson-Eastwood, 21, Student, Henfield
“I think Mr Evans has been rehabilitated, he has served his time and there is no point in having a prison system if you do not allow them to have a job afterwards.”
Chloe Davies, 22, Clinical Programmer, Swansea
“I don’t think he should be allowed to play again. He would be in a position where he would be seen as a role model and it is not like returning to your everyday job.”
Tony Evans, 79, Retired, Penarth
“Yes, he should play again. He has served his term and from the reports in the media it seems the sentence is undeniably questionable. So ignoring the voices of the strident feminists in the media, the lad should be given a chance, and from what I understand, he has an appeal and people should wait until then.”
Rhiannon Austin, 22, General Sales Assistant, Cardiff
“I do, yes. He has been to prison and I don’t think he should be punished a second time especially with the nature of the case and the fact it may go to appeal.”
Convicted rapist Ched Evans could once again put on his football boots and represent his national team in Cardiff.
A return is not imminent, as he is not signed to a club, but it has not been ruled out by the Football Association of Wales.
Evans was jailed for five years in April 2012 for raping a 19 year old, who was judged too drunk to give consent. However, he was released last week.
In a video statement he says, “It is a rare and extraordinary privilege to be permitted to play professional football. It is my hope that I will be able to return.”
The former Sheffield United striker represented Wales on 13 occasions, but a possible return to the international fold has caused a split in opinion.
