What do you think the main factors behind homelessness are?
Dani Davies, 19, Customer Engagement Manager, Cardiff
“A lot of people associate themselves with drugs, but also the government doesn’t care about them as much as they should.”
Reuben Agyenim, 21, Student, Bristol
“I think it’s to do with stability of the house, being able to get your head down. I believe stability definitely is a main cause.”
Jethro Hyams, 29, Security Guard, Pembrokeshire
“They can either be coming from a broken home, or it’s because of drugs or alcohol. That kind of thing. There are also a lot of ex armed forces living on the streets.”
Catherine Dunn, 59, Sales Assistant, Cardiff
“There’s not enough housing in a lot of areas, and people are jobless. I think that there’s also too much overcrowding.”
Matthew Jones, 24, Sales Assistant, Blackpool
“I think it’s to do with the self as lots of people can’t get jobs. It’s also to do with drugs and alcohol maybe, and how they were brought up.”
Neil Owen, 55, Lecturer, Bangor
“I think the main reasons are mostly to do with family issues, and also people who are unable to find employment.”
The number of Welsh households accepted as homeless has declined this year, with the current figure at 14,160 for the year 2015, according to StatsWales.
Despite the seeming influx in homeless people throughout Wales, this is not the case, with homeless numbers falling from 15,855 last year.
StatsWales confirms that the main reason behind homelessness in Cardiff is the loss of rented or tiered accommodation, with the total figure being 230.
Llion Bevan, a campaigns officer at Cardiff charity Shelter Cymru says, “Cardiff is relatively well catered for due to a mixture of local authority provision and charitable causes working to help also.”
He added, “It has been a tough year with the demand for advice, but many of our surgeries are working to full capacity.”
