WRC Wales
Finland’s Jari-Matti Latvala and co-driver Mikka Antilla won the Wales Rally GB in their Ford Fiesta WRC, three minutes 42.9 seconds ahead of Norway’s Mads Ostberg.
Ostberg and Swedish co-driver, Jonas Andersson, moved into second place as a result of newly-crowned, eight-time World Rally Champion, Sebastien Loeb’s retirement on Stage 18 of the rally on Sunday 13 November due to an accident.
Norwegian, Henning Solberg, and Austrian co-driver, Ilka Minor, finished in third place overall.
British drivers
British MINI driver Kris Meeke and his Irish co-driver Paul Nagle started the final Stage 23 of the rally only 1.2 seconds behind Solberg but a spin put paid to third place on the podium.
In fifth place, one minute and 53 seconds behind Meeke was Cumbria’s Matthew Wilson driving a Ford Fiesta RS WRC.
Welsh drivers
Elfyn Evans and co-driver Andrew Edwards, were the leading Welsh crew in their Ford Fiesta R2 until they retired in Stage 16 on Saturday after a heavy landing following the ‘jump’ in Sweet Lamb, which also claimed Jason Pritchard and co-driver Dale Furniss in their Suburu Impreza.
Victorious pair already planning next triumph
Carmarthen co-driver Gareth Roberts partnered his Irish team mate Craig Breen to win the first World Rally Competition (WRC) Academy Cup at Wales Rally GB on the weekend.
“This is the best thing that has happened in my rallying career yet,” said 24-year-old Roberts.
The Academy Cup is a competition to find new young talent among aspiring rally drivers.
The €500,000 prize was awarded to Craig Breen to spend on developing his career in 2012 as he beat his Estonian rival, Egon Kaur, on fastest stage times.
“I’m a young guy that has got big aspirations and unfortunately I won’t do anything but do my best. I want to win,” said Breen as he revealed determined plans to go with his co-driver to Monte Carlo WRC next and win there.
