Each year, this whimsical group collects submissions of artwork and hands them out to unsuspecting citizens on one mammoth bike ride around Cardiff and the Bay. All the artwork is exhibited before the ride to allow everyone to view the contributions before some lucky pedestrians have the rolled-up works thrust upon them to take home for their own.
This local blog is reclaiming the road for those cyclists among us who feel a bike is not simply a mode of transport, but also a vital fashion accessory. The first item on its manifesto reads, “I choose to cycle chic and, at every opportunity, I will choose style over speed.”
No one wants a scruffy bicycle. Certini Bicycle Shop, located in the basement of House of Fraser on St Mary Street, run a monthly Ladies’ Maintenance Course, where, for £10 per person, you can learn how to make sure your bike scrubs up.
This Swiss artist is responsible for the optical illusion that can be seen from the Cardiff Bay Barrage, a popular cycle route which links up the Bay to Penarth. 3 Ellipses for 3 Locks appears to be a baffling assortment of yellow splodges, until you stand in exactly the right vantage point, allowing these seemingly random shapes to converge into three concentric circles.
A Public Art Design Competition has generated the latest surge of bicycle-related creativity in Cardiff, once again proving that the Welsh like their art on wheels.
Cardiff Council launched the competition in collaboration with the Cardiff Design Festival as a part of the development of Enfys, the new cycle network that aims to improve links around the city. The purpose was to inspire artwork to adorn the intended routes.
Local artists will judge the competition, and the winners will feature on BT and Virgin Media cabinets along the network from next spring.
The Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, Highways, Traffic and Transportation, Ralph Cook, said, “This is a great opportunity for the public to design public art, whilst also promoting cycling within the city.”
