Clark’s History
Clark’s Pies was founded in 1913 by Janet Maud “Mary” Clark. She started producing pies in ceramic dishes and giving them away to neighbors, family and friends who suggested they were good enough to sell.
Successive generations have carried on the pie-making tradition and it was Mary’s son Alfred Dutch who thought to register the “Clarpie” trademark. Alfred’s son Dennis opened the premises in Grangetown that is the base of Clark’s Original Pies. Dennis is still involved in the business even though he is now in his eighties.
Clark’s Pies continue to hold a special place in the hearts of many Cardiff people. As a testament to the legacy of Mary and her family, the Clark’s history has been included in The Cardiff Story.

They’re not only one of Cardiff’s favourite bites but also one of the city’s most well-known brands. Clark’s Pies are stepping up production in readiness for the thousands of hungry sports fans descending on the city this weekend.
“We will be making around 4,000 more pies this week,” said Fred Rosoman, Bakery Manager and great-great-grandson of Clark’s founder Mary Clark. That means 9,000 pies will be made at the same, small Grangetown premises that the pie dynasty has been using since 1955.
As well as its renowned trademark, Clark’s can also be recognised by the unique standalone pastry meaning they require no foil to stay intact and can be eaten easily. Rosoman added, “It’s not just the taste, it’s the tradition that makes them unique.”
