The Royal College of Nursing says Welsh Government investment in training will boost morale.
£95 million is to be invested by the government to train new health staff including nurses, physiotherapists and radiographers.
The government says the money will allow for 3000 new students in these subjects in Wales.
Peter Meredith-Smith from the Royal College of Nursing Wales says:
“The RCN in Wales has argued for years now that investment in community staffing infrastructure in Wales has not kept pace with changing models of care across the country, with a shift of care from hospitals to community settings.”
“Clearly it will take a few years for the effects of this investment to fully bear fruit, with a time-lag between the new money flowing into the system and nurses completing their education and training. However, the impact of this announcement on the morale of frontline staff should not be under-estimated.”
£50,000 will also be used for further training of existing staff.
Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething said:
“Education and training is fundamental to ensuring the sustainability of our workforce.”
“This £95m investment will ensure that our healthcare professionals are able to provide high quality care now and in the future and that patients will be able to receive care closer to home.”
